$ 3,500.00 USD

Framed gouache painting of a young man by Matthew William Boyhan (unsigned).  The subject gazes past the viewer with an air of pensive absorption, his lean torso and ruddy brow aglow with the freshness of youth. Vigorous and moody, the figure seems caught between one world and the next.

Studying under painter Charles Woodbury, and later at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art, Boyhan was the youngest winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He continued practicing in the states, where he taught painting at St. Marks School in Southboro, Massachusetts for many years.

US, circa 1940

Dimensions: 21W x 2D x 25H
